“We are always looking for new members for the ensemble to combine their artistry with us, and co-curate something new and unexpected.”

As an emerging ensemble, Temporal Harmonies Inc. (THI) is motivated by two artistic goals: promoting music created by their generation and breaking the “fourth wall” between the performer(s) and audiences. THI aims to commission, premiere and promote music that is created by Millennials and Gen Zers. This ensemble showcases their peers’ works, because they feel strongly connected to the music from their shared cultural background. Their second goal is to create a truly engaging experience - a performance that is interactive and communicative. They believe that the traditional way of enjoying classical music feels rigid and out of date; therefore, THI aims to deliver music that reflects their generation’s taste and habits. They aspire to engage with the audience through interdisciplinary art forms. One of the ways they achieve this is by enabling the audience to create graphic scores during performances, which they then improvise from. THI is a fluid ensemble that has three founder members, Lydia (Flute), Miki (Cello) and Xiaowen (Piano). The ensemble is not limited to being an instrumental ensemble, but an artistic collective that offers multidisciplinary exhibitions.

Within the first year of forming at the Royal Academy of Music, Temporal Harmonies Inc. was awarded the Jacob Barnes Prize, aimed at encouraging creative and imaginative music-making. Soon after, THI gave two well-received concerts at Wigmore Hall as part of the For Crying Out Loud and Music for the Moment series. With outreach being among the core values of the ensemble, THI worked with Spitalfields Music Foundation and composer Electra Perivolaris to curate and lead sessions introducing graphic scores to the pupils of various schools in the Tower Hamlets. THI’s outreach work includes a Music for the Moment performance in Wigmore Hall, welcoming people living with dementia, their friends, family, and carers.

Part of THI’s mission is broadening the flute, cello, piano trio literature. In collaboration with Royal Philharmonic Society Composer Fellow Zygmund de Somogyi, Temporal Harmonies Inc. co-curated Quarter-Life Crisis—a Wigmore Hall lunchtime concert consisting of music written within their lifetimes—including two premieres of Somogyi’s compositions, generously supported by the Royal Philharmonic Society. After the successful premier of the “Quarter-Life Crisis”, THI gave this programme a second outing in Iceland. This pioneering ensemble made their international debut as part of Seigla Festival at the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland in August. The inspiration behind the second half of the concert with Seigla stemmed from their first ever performance as an ensemble. They debuted in London through an interactive Student’s Create Festival event, As You Are, which focused on the audience’s perception and engagement during the concert. THI’s next concert is the Leeds Chamber Music Series in January 2026.
